St. Olaf Band will Entertain and Benefit Local Youth
SALINAS, CA - The St. Olaf Band, dubbed “one of America’s preeminent bands” by The New
Yorker, will perform at the Steinbeck Institute for Arts and Culture (formerly Sherwood Hall) as part
of its 2012 national tour. The concert will take place on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at 7 p.m.
The concert is free for all students, $10 for adults and seniors and group rates (10+) are available.
Tickets are available in person on the night of the concert and in advance at www.stolaftickets.com
and by calling 1-800-363-5487. YOSAL parents are invited to attend at no cost thanks to a kind
donation made by the Monterey Rotary Club.
The concert is in collaboration with the Youth Orchestra of the Salinas Valley (YOSAL), an El Sistema-inspired music program founded in July 2010. Conceptualized more than 35 years ago by Dr. José Antonio Abreu, El Sistema ignited a revolution in the world of classical music as thousands of students from the most underserved communities of Venezuela began studying music each day after school.
The Salinas Chapter offers after-school music instruction in recorder, strings, and choral methods to
150 students in kindergarten through seventh grade from the Salinas Elementary and Alisal school
districts. The mission of YOSAL is to “transform the lives of our youth and our communities
through the inspiration, discipline, and performance of classical orchestral music.”
Prior to the evening’s performance, St. Olaf Band members will meet with YOSAL students for a joint
rehearsal, master class, music appreciation and instrument workshops, and a special dinner sponsored
by the Monterey Rotary Club.
YOSAL ensembles will perform during the St. Olaf concert, and 30% of the proceeds for the concert
will go directly towards funding YOSAL programming.
